Tasks of an Effective
Sunday School Teacher
(From brainstorming suggestions made by
conference participants)
The tasks listed below were suggested by participants
in various training sessions with teachers of adults. This list is not
intended to be “the model,” nor is it intended to include all good things
teachers may do as God leads. It is simply a compilation of ideas gleaned
from conferees. You will think of others.
Read the list 3 times.
- On the first reading
identify five tasks that you think are the most important and vital for an
effective teacher. Put a star * by those five.
- On the second reading
identify the five tasks that you feel are most often overlooked or not
done by teachers. Put an “X” by those.
- On the third reading
identify the five tasks that you want to work most on this next year. Put
a check by those.

There is likely no such thing as an “omni-competent teacher.”
That is, probably no teacher we know can do all these
tasks all the time. However, most of us could do better than we are. Our
challenge is to “press forward toward the mark of the high calling in
Christ Jesus.”
